This video demonstrates how to add a role or rate for a Matter in Practice Pro

Video Transcript:

Managing Roles and Rate Assignments for a Matter

The system determines billing rates by following a defined rate hierarchy. If a specific rate is not found at one level, the system continues searching through the hierarchy in the following order:

  1. Client-specific rates

  2. Member type rates

  3. Default member, member type, or firm rates

The key rule to remember is:

  • Matter-level assignments take priority over client-level assignments

  • Specific member assignments take priority over member type assignments

For example, if Attorney Smith has a matter-specific rate assignment, that rate will always be applied before any client-level or default rates are considered.

The system continues through the hierarchy until it finds the first applicable rate.

Best Practices

  • Use role groups when your firm has standardized staffing and billing setups.

  • Use custom assignments when a matter requires unique rates or specialized team assignments.
